Our Sin Bearer
Because Jesus was Devine He did not experience sin. While on the Cross He became our sin bearer as Isaiah 53:5-6 foretold: “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” Note that the Scripture said: “The Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” In other words Jesus did not experience sin which is iniquity, but had the burden of sin laid on Him while on the cross. If Jesus had experienced sin then He would not have been the Lamb of God that John spoke of: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”(John 1:29)
As our high priest Jesus undertook the sacrifice for our sin, however, unlike the high priest of Israel who were required to offer a sacrifice for their own sins before they undertook their duties, Jesus was not required to offer a sacrifice for Himself because, He was without sin as 1 John 3:5 states: “But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.” Referring to Jesus office of High Priest, Hebrews 4:15 reads: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are —yet he did not sin.”
The life of a Born Again Christian is one full of hope and forgiveness. We have been blessed to live with the knowledge that we have a Redeemer who went to the cross on our behalf, and was pierced for our transgressions. I do pray that you also have experienced this truth, and have accepted God’s gift of forgiveness as the verse says; "the punishment that brought us peace was on him." In other words; Jesus took the punishment of our sin upon Himself, resulting in peace for each and everyone who has accepted His sacrifice upon their behalf. It is by His wounds - the suffering's of Jesus - that sinners are forgiven. How can we not desire to accept, and serve Our Sin Bearer?
Today, let us praise and follow Jesus, our sin Bearer.
