Stern Words Of Warning
In Luke 6:24-26, Jesus spoke stern words of warning concerning the standards of the world: “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.”
These words of Jesus are directed to the rich and arrogant of this world. However, Jesus is not saying having wealth is wrong. He is pointing out that living a life of self centered pleasure is not living a life for God. Living a life of plenty, and pleasure centered, can leave one starved of a spiritual life. People are also warned against desiring to become popular in this world because, the standards of this world are not God’s standards. We see this even today when false religious teachers are accepted by the world, while God’s Salvation message is rejected. They travel the world in their personal airplanes and limos, paid for by their followers who hang on every word of their false, feel good message.
As followers of The Lord Jesus we are encouraged to reach out to a hurting world, both in a practical way as well as in a spiritual way. That is not to say that we ignore our own daily needs. For we have been given a body that requires feeding and exercising. We are expected to look after our health. For the Bible teaches that a Christian’s body becomes the temple of the Holy Spirit. Also, as parents we have the responsibility to provide for the needs of our family.
For many people, looking at the way we live our lives is the only example that they may have regarding a Christian lifestyle. We became their living Epistle’s living out Godly lives for all to see, under the guidance of The Holy Spirit as Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: ”do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” Paul also encouraged each believer: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is —his good, pleasing and perfect will.”(Romans 12:2)
Today, let us thank God for the guidance of The Holy Spirit.
