That Quite Moonlit Night.
The stars in the Judean sky shone brightly on that quite moonlit night. The hour been late, the people of the small town were asleep as the bleat of contented sheep carried on the gentle breeze. Out in the fields, shepherds settled down for their nightly watch. These are men who work through the night out in fields, while their neighbors sleep in the comfort of their homes. On many occasions shepherds would mind their sheep through long cold nights, however, tonight was pleasant and the sheep were settled down - this should be a quiet watch.
As the night progressed they became aware of a bright light from above beaming down upon them. From this heavenly light a mighty angel appeared, his powerful voice braking the silence of that quite moonlit night. Each shepherd experienced fear because of his awesome appearance; until they heard the messenger’s salutation. To their amazement the shepherds heard the angel explain that he came bearing a message of eternal hope, saying: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
To their utter amazement, the shepherds then witnessed a Heavenly Host filling the sky and offering praise to Yahweh as they sang: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” On that glorious night - out in the Judean fields - lowly shepherds were the first to receive the good news of The Savior’s birth.
After the angelic messengers had returned to Heaven; and all was once more quite, the awestruck shepherds pondered their experience. In their desire to understand the message that they had received, all agreed on the importance of finding the newborn Messiah. Recalling the angels instructions when he said: “This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger,” they left the sheep, and walked in the direction of the nearby little town of Bethlehem.
What a night! Filled with reverend admiration, these men were the first to see, and later give testimony to the birth of The Messiah, as they told people of their experience on that most unusual of nights; “And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them.” The Divine plan of salvation for humanity commenced with the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem.
Today, let us thank our Heavenly Father for the Christ Child.
