I Am The True Vine
The Gospel writer John, recorded a very enlightening statement of Jesus in chapter 15:1-2 of his Gospel where Jesus spoke of how both He, and The Father work together in the life of believers: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
In chapter 1 verse 9 of his Gospel, John had referred to Jesus as The True Light who came into the world, inferring that Jesus was the original light that would enlighten every person to Gods Truth. Then in chapter six, John explained that Jesus is The Bread of Life, implying that Jesus is all we need spiritually for eternal life. Now in chapter 15 John explains that Jesus is The True Vine that believers are attached to in order to receive spiritual life. This is because Jesus is the original source of spiritual life, and therefore, eternal life.
The vine supporters and sustaines the branches. Without the sustenance that the vine supplies, the branches would wither and die. So it is with believers, unless we are attached to The One who is the source of our faith, our faith will be without spiritual sustenance - it will wither up and die. Without that personal relationship with Jesus as our Savior and Lord, our faith is merely a religious experience. Jesus offers you and I a living faith. Scripture states in Acts 17: 28: "For in him we live and move and have our being."
In verse one Jesus states that His Father is the gardener, meaning that it is The Father who oversees the sincere Christian life. For it was He who sent Jesus to be our Savior: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God's one and only Son." - John 3:16-18.
As Paul explains, the genuine Christian life is a life lived in Jesus Christ: "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." - Colossians 2:6-7. The Christian faith is unique in so far as, to become a Christian, one must repent of their sins. Repentance is an old English word that describes a willingness to turn from our sin toward Jesus Christ. It literally means a complete U-turn on the road of life - a change of heart and a change of mind. It means that you are willing to follow Jesus Christ and to receive him as your Savior and Lord. It was Jesus who said: “repent and believe the Good News” - Mark 1:15.
Today, let us praise Our Farther for The True Vine - Jesus our Savior and Lord.
