Psalm 23 -ESV
Psalm 23 has been a great comfort to believers for thousands of years. Written by King David, his words have become a comfort, and a blessing to believers down through the years. Born in Bethlehem where most families had sheep, David portrayed Yahweh as The Comforting Shepherd leading and protecting His people, just as a shepherd leads and protects his flock. The opening verse’s proclaim:
“1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
3 He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness
for his name's sake.”
Throughout history evil men and nations have threatened weaker nations, bringing fear and dread upon their people. The times in which we live are no different as we witness the devastation of war around our world. Over the last few years we have witnessed thousands upon thousands of refugees fleeing corruption, poverty and war. What hope do desperate people have unless they have hope in the The Good Shepherd? In verse four we have the comforting, and heart felt declaration of trust, that believers have experienced from their Heavenly Father:
“4 Even though I walk
through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.”
As a warrior king, David then writes concerning his victories, of which he acknowledges came from The Almighty:
“5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.”
No matter the circumstances of our lives, we can find solace in the final verse of this comforting Psalm as it speaks to the amazing assurances that all believers hold onto as a personal promise from The Lord:
“6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.”
Today, let us give praise to The God who brings comfort in the toughest of circumstances in our lives.
