The Redeemer.
To redeem something is to buy it back. As an example if you had taken a piece of jewelry to a pawn shop, then in a few days you wanted it back, you would be required to put down a sum of money by which you would redeem your jewelry. Put more dramatically, if one pays a ransom to purchase the freedom of a captive, that person becomes the captive’s redeemer. Our first parent's Adam and Eve, lived in the Garden of Eden where they freely communed with God. Then came the day when Satan tempted Eve, she succumbed - eating the forbidden fruit.
Sin had entered our world, bringing with it all of its terrible consequences. Where once God’s peace ruled, now war and suffering became humanities lot. However, God, in His grace and mercy, reached out to our suffering world by choosing men who would speak to mankind - showing them the way back to God. Abraham was the first to have a covenant with God, becoming the father of a nation. Moses gave the people God’s Law, in which a sacrificial system was established. Sacrifices were offered on behalf of the people’s sins.
However, sacrifices could not change the people. Only God can change a person in a permanent way. Each one needs a personal Redeemer so that we can start again. We need God, who alone can change us from the inside. In Isaiah chapter 59:20 God promised; “The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins, declares the LORD." Israel was awaited its Redeemer, which makes the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem a Momentous occasion. God, in the person of Jesus, came among humanity to redeem His people. (Matthew 1:23)
Today, let us thank our God for His Redemption.
