Jesus Offered The Ultimate Sacrifice
Isaiah 53:7 speaks to how Messiah would be The Sacrificial Lamb of God when it states: "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth." In this prophecy we see how Messiah will be the ultimate substitution sacrifice, not only for the Jewish people but for all of humankind. In the Gospel of John 1:29, the Baptist identified Jesus as "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world."
Prior to 70 AD, the fields outside the town of Bethlehem were used as pasture for the sheep that would be sent to the Temple in Jerusalem. As we know, Jesus the Messiah was born in Bethlehem, and the first people told of his birth were shepherds keeping watch over the sheep that would be used in temple sacrifices. This Jewish sacrificial system, which had continued from the time of Moses, came to an end in 70 AD after the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple by the Roman army under the command of Titus, who would later became Emperor.
Prior to His crucifixion, Jesus celebrated Passover with His disciples in Jerusalem as described in Mark 14:22-25: "While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take it; this is my body." Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. "This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many," he said to them. "Truly I tell you, I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God." Jesus was ushering in the New Covenant by demonstrating to His disciples that the Old Covenant ritual of the Passover meal would be fulfilled in His upcoming death.
As further confirmation of this truth - the following day - Jesus proclaimed publicly from the cross: “it is finished” (John 19:30) This statement signified that the need for the Old Covenant sacrifices had come to an end, because, as The Sacrificial Lamb of God, Jesus was offering the ultimate sacrifice for sin once and for all: “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:14) Consequently, there is now no other effective sacrifice for sin, because Jesus - as God incarnate - was the Ultimate Atoning Sacrifice for our sin.
For all who desire to experience the incredible blessing of forgiveness, scripture teaches: “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.” (Romans 10:9-11)
Today, let us give thanks with a greatfull heart for Jesus and His Atoning Sacrifice.
