Merciful and Gracious
Psalm 103:8-14 "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. 13 As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him. 14 For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust." (ESV)
This portion of Psalm 103 describes God as merciful and gracious. To show mercy is to have a compassionate and gracious character. For someone to be compassionate is to have sympathy and concern for others, and to be gracious is to be courteous, kind, and pleasant, especially from a person of higher status toward another. Verse 8 teaches that God is abounding in steadfast love. Do you know God as having abounding steadfast love towards you? It took many years for me to come to a knowledge of the fact that I had a Heavenly Father who loved me.
To chide in verse 9 is to scold or rebuke. This verse states our merciful God will not always rebuke you and I for our failures and sins, because, as the following verse states He does not deal with us according to the penalty that our sins deserve. Instead, He is ready to show His love as verse 11 reveals "For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him." To be steadfast is to be firm and unwavering. This was one of the verses that spoke so clearly to me concerning the love of God; after I had committed my life to Jesus Christ. The revelation of my Father's steadfast love was an assurance that I had been cleansed, and accepted into the family of God. What a merciful God we serve.
Verse 12 "as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us." This is one of the most wonderful and encouraging verses in the Psalms that I have read. It tells me that God's mercy and compassion is without limit. When I confessed my sins, and asked forgiveness in the name of Jesus my Redeemer and Lord, they were removed completely. Verse 13 confirms that we can trust in God as a merciful Father when it states "As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him." Thank you my Father for your Merciful and, your Gracious Love.
Today let us give praise to our merciful and gracious God.
