How Do We Get To Heaven?
Ask most people "what must you do to get to Heaven?" and they will answer, "believe in God." Down through history there have been many different religions teaching their followers belief in a god. Will all of these belief systems get their adherents into heaven? Is a belief in God, or even many gods enough? Scripture says; "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that —and shudder." (James 2:19). If even the demons believe in God, is believing in God the only way for one to get into heaven?
When Paul and Silas were asked concerning salvation, (which means going to heaven,) they answered; "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved." (Acts 16:31.) The Mormons say that they believe in Jesus. Those of the J. W. persuasion also claim a belief in Jesus. What do Christians mean when they say that they believe in the Lord Jesus? To believe is to rely on, to totally trust in, to adhere to. It is to have complete confidence in a system or a person. According to Scripture, there are no human systems that can get a person into Heaven. It was Jesus who said "I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins." (John 8:24.)
Scripture teaches that when we believe in Jesus, we are putting all of our trust in Him. Through this act of laying all of our trust in Him we become children of God. In John 1:12-13, we read; "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God." By becoming children of God, we will live for eternity in Heaven with our Heavenly Father, and Jesus our Savior.
The Lord Jesus came from Heaven to redeem humanity from the power of sin by taking our sin upon himself when He died on the cross. This act of sacrifice showed God's love for fallen humanity. Consequently, whoever believes that Jesus has died in their place will not be condemned as we read in John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Today, let us give tanks for the promise of eternal life.
