The Merciful Good Shepherd.
When considering the mercy of God in The Bible, Psalm 23 stands out where it depicts The Lord as a caring shepherd as in the first three verses: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake."
These verses have been used as words of comfort down through the years. In them we hear of our merciful God portrayed as a shepherd. Shepherds were known not only to provide for their sheep by leading them to green pastures, but also protecting them from marauding animals even to the point of laying down their own lives. Consequently these verse’s are assuring us that our Heavenly Father will always be there in our time of need, bringing us into a place of safety and peace.
Furthermore, as Christians, these verses are even more beautiful as we remember the words of Jesus when He announced in John 10:14-16: “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.” When comparing Psalm 23 and John Chapter 10 we can see that The Merciful Good Shepherd cares about us in both our daily life, as also our spiritual life.
The mercy of our Good Shepherd is also evident in verse six of Psalm 23: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” Jesus came into our world in order to both show the way to The Father, and to lay down His life in order that the members of His fold can receive forgiveness and spend eternity with Him. What a merciful and loving God we have. I do pray that you know Him, and consider yourself part of His flock.
Today, let us acknowledge Jesus as our Merciful Good Shepherd.
