Mercy And Love
The mercy and love of our God is written throughout the pages of Scripture. One of the most loved verses describing His mercy and love is found in the Gospel of John: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." (John 3:16)
The popularity of this verse is such that the words “John 3:16” can be seen on the rear bumper of cars. Even while watching a sports game on T.V. one may see a fan holding up a sign with the words “John3:16” for all to see. What is it about this verse that makes it so popular? Why is it so loved by all Bible believing Christians? It is a verse that brings great comfort because, it speaks of a merciful and loving Heavenly Father who, as the author of the plan of Salvation, instituted the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of sinful humanity.
The verse declares God’s love for humankind: "For God so loved the world." Looking at our world with all of its evil, this is a remarkable statement which can only be made by a merciful God. A God who can look past a person’s faults and see their potential as a repentant sinner saved by Grace.
The next portion of John 3:16 shows how deep God's loving mercy is for humanity: "He gave his one and only Son." These are familiar words to all Bible believing Christians. The Mercy of God was demonstrated when Jesus came into our world. His life revealed to all God’s Love through His ministry which included reaching out to hurting people bringing healing and restoration.
The ministry of Jesus concluded with His eventual sacrificial death and resurrection, offering forgiveness of sin which gives you and I the opportunity to spend eternity in His presence as the last portion of John 3:16 declares: "whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." Words of Mercy offering forgiveness and Salvation to all who repent and believe.
Today, let us thank our God for His love and mercy.
