Law And Grace
Ask people concerning the 10 Commandments and most will admit the struggle they have to keep them. There are stories of people who dedicate their life in an endeavor to live according to the commandments, believing by doing so they will be pleasing God. David knew well the difficulty of keeping the commandments, which were part of the Mosaic Law, and prayed for Devine help: “But who can discern their own errors? Forgive my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression.” (Psalm 19: 12-13)
When one transgressed and required forgiveness under the Old Covenant, they went to a priest who offered a blood sacrifice on their behalf as an atonement for their sin. Under the New Covenant we turn to The Lord Jesus, who has obtained a Righteousness which has fulfilled the Mosaic Law, and is appropriated by Grace, through Faith in His Once and for all Sacrifice as explained by Paul:
“But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood —to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished — he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:21-26)
Grace is the unmerited favour of God, meaning that it is a gift, and not something that you or I can earn. Consequently when, as a born again believer we have struggles in our spiritual life, we know that we can turn to The Lord because we have the Holy Spirit to guide us as Jesus promised in John 14:15-17: “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”
Today, let us thank Our Heavenly Father for His Grace.
