In The Beginning
Genesis 1:1; "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."
The word Genesis means beginnings, that been so, the Book of Genesis records the beginning of time as we know it. God exists outside of our time, thus He was in the beginning and created all things, physical; as in the heavens and the earth, also time as we experience it. Chapter one gives an overview of creation, cumulating with Adam and Eve who were created above all other creatures - been able to rationalise and think freely. They had a unique relationship with God, who would walk with them in the garden of Eden.
In verses 16 & 17 of chapter two, we read of a prohibition when God forbade the eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Chapter three containes the record of the fall of Adam and Eve from innocent before God, to disobedient sinners. It describes how Satan -in the form of a serpent - deceives Eve concerning Gods command concerning the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Not content with living a perfect life in a perfect relationship with God, Eve listened to the deceiver, then enticed Adam to also partake of the forbidden fruit. Because of this disobedience their eyes were opened to the knowledge of sin, bringing death to their innocence. The consequence of their sin brought a curse: Adam must now work the ground in order to grow their food, while Eve will bear children in pain. Their life on earth will eventually end with physical death. Meanwhile, the serpent will crawl on the ground, and become a symbol of fear.
Verse 15 of Chapter 3 is the first prophesy concerning the coming of Jesus, who would be born of a woman in order to bring salvation from the curse of sin, which equates to reconciliation with God, "I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." There will be many more promises of the coming of a Savior which will be fulfilled in the birth - the life - and most importantly, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; who is the only hope for humanity. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." John 3:16-17. Praise be to His Holy Name.
Today, let us thank our Creator, for our Savior.
