The Lord Almighty Is With Us.
As a loving Father, our God is ever ready to listen to our prayers. He is the supplier of all our needs, and is the source of our physical, as well as our spiritual well-being. Many of the Psalms reflect how the Jewish people relied upon The Lord Almighty as their helper and protector in times of need. Psalm 46 is a good example;
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress."
This psalm declares the experienced of the people living in Jerusalem - the city of God of verse 4. Even though tragedies may surround them, the psalm declares the people’s trust in the God of Jacob who is their refuge and strength. From Hebrew scriptures such as this, the people of God understand that The Lord Almighty is their source of blessings and security. Inspired by Psalm 46, Martin Luther wrote: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.”
Down through history God’s people have always know that they can run to Him in their time of need. So what about today, do you and I consider The Lord our refuge in times of need? When troubles invade our lives do we fret and allow them to overwhelming us, or on the other hand, do we turn to God in prayer seeking His help? If our knowledge of The Lord is that of a loving Father who will hear, and answer our prayers, we will daily turn to Him with confidence. As verse one of Psalm 46 encourages: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
Verse 10 gives the instruction: "Be still, and know that I am God." In the truest sense, this can only be experienced when we know Jesus as our Savior and Lord. We who have repented, and accepted God's gift of Salvation, have the assurance of eternal life in the presence of All Mighty God as scripture teaches in Romans 10:9: “because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Therefore, we can proclaim with the Psalmist: "The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress" (verse 11).
Today, let us thank our Heavenly Father for His ever present help.
