How Majestic Is His Name
Psalm 8 reflects on the glory of God’s creation along with the creation of humanity. It opens and closes with a doxology as David proclaimers the majesty of Gods name throughout the earth: “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.”
One can imagine David out on a clear night enthralled at the glittering of the stars. We can only imagine how clear the heavens would have been before electricity and pollution.
David then goes on to speak of how even children see the glory of God which weakens the arguments of the enemies of God and those who strike out with malice which is the meaning of avenger in this verse: “Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.”
Jesus refers to this verse when challenged in the Temple as recorded in Matthew 21:16: “Do you hear what these children are saying?” they asked him. “Yes,” replied Jesus, “have you never read, “‘From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’?”
In verse’s 3 & 4 David considers the creation of the ageless glory of the heavens compared to humanity who are here for a little while, then gone:
“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?”
This is a very profound question. David only understood the stars as lamps that light the night sky. We on the other hand have a deeper understanding of the universe. When considering the vastness of the cosmos humanity is indeed very small, in fact puny. However God has created humanity with splendour which prompts the statement of verse’s 5-8: “You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.”
So why did God make men and woman with such honour? The answer is found in Genesis 1:26-28: “Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. ”
The book of Hebrews equates verse’s 4-6 to Jesus as the unique Son of God and Son of Man: “It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? You made them a little lower than the angels; you crowned them with glory and honor and put everything under their feet.” In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death fo everyone.”
(Hebrews 2:5-9:)
And so we come to verse 9 of Psalm 8 which is so appropriate as a closing verse: “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
The Psalms are translations from the Greek, however, In the original Hebrew, this verse reads: “Yahweh our Sovereign how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
Today, let us praise our God for revealing His Majestic Name to us.
