Simon Peter
Simon Peter (whose name means rock) is feeling ashamed. He has failed the Master. After having once bravely proclaimed that he would follow Jesus even unto death, he now feels smaller than a pebble as he relives the scene in the garden.
Jesus had asked Peter to watch with him while He spent time praying to His Father. Yet the exhausted Peter along with the other disciples, were asleep when the temple guards accompanied by a mob arrived to arrest the teacher from Nazareth. Simon Peter drew his sword and cut the ear of a servant before running away in fear with the rest of the disciples. Regretting his actions, and regaining a portion of courage, Peter followed the temple guards and their prisoner to the house of the High Priest. In the courtyard, he was confronted and accused of being a follower of The Galilean. In fear for his own life Simon Peter denied even knowing Jesus. It was then that he heard the rooster crow.
Once more he is filled with regret as tears of sorrow start to flow. Peter has experienced the weakness of the flesh in-spite of how bravely he had previously spoken.
Over the next few days the followers of Jesus concealed themselves in an upper room. They became confused when they heard the story of the empty tomb, until Peter and John ran to see for themselves. What does it mean? Where is the body? Without warning, Jesus appears among them. O' the joy of being forgiven.
When the Day of Pentecost arrived, the people of Jerusalem beheld Simon Peter, now filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaiming Jesus of Nazareth as The Messiah. Peter will bravely follow his risen Savior onto death.
Today, let us thank our God for second chances.
