Our Ever Present Help
Psalm 46:1-2 proclaims: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.” Considering the times that we are living in, do we really and truly consider The Lord our refuge? When troubles invade our lives do we fret and allow them to be overwhelming, or, do we turn to Our Father in prayer? If our knowledge of God is that of a loving Father who will hear and answer our prayers, we will turn to Him with confidence knowing, and believing verse one: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
Our Heavenly Father is ever ready to pour out blessings, and meet the needs of His people. He is the supplier of all our needs, and is the source of our physical, as well as our spiritual well-being. With The Almighty on our side, we are winners as Martin Luther wrote: “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing.”
As born again Christians, there are many times when we experience God’s comfort in our lives. By way of a personal testimony, allow me to share my memory of the experience a few years back that started in the doctor’s office. I was there to hear the results of medical tests. Looking up from reading his reports the doctor said that the news was not good and I would require surgery for cancer. Amazingly I did not feel anxious, for I know that The Lord is in control of my life because, He is my ever present help.
Through it all there was a feeling of The Lord’s nearness and comfort. My heart was at peace remembering my Savior’s promise: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." (John 14:27) The peace that Jesus promised brought much comfort, sustaining me through the surgery and lengthy recovery. Because of my personal experience, I can truthfully proclaim that He is faithful and His promises are trustworthy because: "God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble."
Some one may ask; “That’s all fine, but what if you did not come through your surgery, what then?” Because of my faith in Jesus, death holds no fear, it is the gateway into the eternal presence of my God and Savior. All who are born again of The Spirit are among the sinners who have been redeemed, whose names are written in the book of life. When this life is over, we know where we are going, and with whom we will live for eternity.
Today, let us continue to turn to The Lord who is our ever present help.
