The Spirit's Work
There are many who consider themselves spiritual, even religious, however, according to the teaching of the Bible, they are not Christians. Paul explains this in Romans 8:7-9: "The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ."
This statement of Paul is very powerful. In these verses Paul lays out the difference between people who are of the world, and those who are born again followers of Jesus Christ. Unless The Holy Spirit has moved upon our heart, we will not come to Jesus, because it is The Spirit that draws and helps us to realize our need of a Savior. He does this by revealing our sinful condition. Without The Holy Spirit we are spiritually blind because the sinful nature is in opposition to God's Law, it desires it's own pleasure, not Gods will.
Paul went on to explain further in 1 Corinthians 2:14 "The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit." It was in John Chapter 14 that Jesus promised He would send the Holy Spirit. Jesus said that the Spirit would live within believers and would lead them into all truth: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.” (John 14:15-17)
When we are surrendered to the leading of The Holy Spirit, and come to God with a humble and a contrite heart, we will worship God in spirit and in truth, because, we are now following God’s way and not mans way. Jesus said: "God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth." (John 4:24)
Today, let us thank Jesus for sending the Spirit who leads us into all truth.
