John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." These words spoken by Jesus areamong the best known, and best loved in the Bible. The great reformer MartinLuther referred to the verse as "the small Gospel." One could say that this verse is the Gospel in a nutshell.
While driving, you may see John3:16 on the rear bumper of the car in front of you.Watching a sports game on T.V. you may see a fan holding up a sign with the words 'John3:16' for all to see. What is it about this verse that makes it so popular? Why is it so loved by all Bible believing Christians? It is a verse that brings great comfort because it speaks of a loving Heavenly Father who, as the author of the plan of Salvation made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of sinful humanity.
The verse starts by God declaring His love: "For God so loved the world." The next portion of John 3:16 shows how deep God's love is for humanity: "He gave his one and only Son." These are familiar words to all Bible believing Christians. Words that can lose the impact of their meaning when heard repeatedly without the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It is only through the Holy Spirit that we can understand the impact of the words as recorded by John: "He gave his one and only Son." This is Divine Love. Love that was willing to make the ultimate sacrifice in order that you and I have the opportunity to spend eternity in His presence as the last portion declares: "whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Today, let us thank our God for His love shown through His Son.
