After Spending A Night In Prayer
“One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.” (Luke 6:12-16)
In our opening verses, we read that The Lord spent the night in prayer before appointing the twelve apostles from among the disciples who were following Him. This is a great lesson for all of us; Jesus knew the importance of going to The Heavenly Father before making an important decision. According to Luke Chapter 10 there were seventy-two disciples following and learning from The Master. Disciples are followers who learn from a teacher, while apostles are the ones who represent the teacher, they carry his authority. We see this in the lives of the twelve later, as they perform miracles and healings, just as Jesus had done in His ministry.
Verse’s 17-19 read: “He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coast of Tyre and Sidon, who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by evil spirits were cured, and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all.”
In these verses, we get some idea of the multitudes that came to hear the Teacher. Some also came in the hope of receiving a healing. The people came from all over the land, the north; Tire and Sidon, and the south; Judea, with Jerusalem as the capital of the province of Palestine. Many would have traveled for days just to see and hear this new teacher. Others would have taken the journey with a suffering loved one in the hope of a healing. Can you imagine the needs represented among the people? Today we can walk into a doctor’s office or a hospital and have our medical needs attended too. However, it was not so in those days. There were no hospitals or walk in clinics. Therefore, when the stories of a miracle worker spread across the land people took notice.
This was no ordinary wonder worker, he spoke with authority concerning God’s Kingdom. His healings were performed in God’s name, this rabbi did not ask for money before performing a healing. He did not claim glory for himself, instead the glory went to God. And so the people came. Friends or family members carried those who were unable to walk. A loving hand led the blind. Even the daemons were subject to The Son of God as He ordered them to leave tormented people. Children were pushed forward through the throng of people by parents in the hope that Jesus would touch them because, power was coming from him, healing them all.
Today, let us praise The Father for the Ministry of The Son.
