Simeon Watches And Waites
In the Gospel of Luke we meet a man named Simeon where we read of him: “Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah.” (Luke 2:25-26)
Simeon had grown up knowing the history and law of his people. He was watching for Gods promise regarding Messiah to be fulfilled. He knew that after Adam’s sin there was a separation between humanity and God. But because of God’s great love for people whom He had created in His own image, He would make a way back for mankind. God had warned the serpent that One would come that would brake the power of sin upon humanity (Genesis 3:15) Simeon was waiting and watching for that One.
Down through the years God spoke to the nation of Israel through the Prophets promising to send this Deliver. Messiah is translated in Greek as The Christ. Isaiah foretold that he would be born of the house of David, and that he would be Immanuel, which means God with us: “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” (Isaiah 7:14)
In chapter 9, Isaiah foretells even more about this child who was to come: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.” (verse’s 6-7)
What a wonderful promise. The Prince of peace was coming. But more than that He would be The Mighty God. The Everlasting Father. These were the names of Jehovah God Himself. God was coming to save His people. The Prophet Micah tells where the Promised One would be born, it would be a small town just 6 miles south of Jerusalem, Bethlehem the birthplace of King David.
And then one glorious day Simeon’s faith was rewarded: “Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying: “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel.” (Luke 2:27-32)
Here was a man who believed Gods promises. Some think that God is slow in keeping his promises however, Gods timing is perfect for, only He knows when the time is right for the promise to be fulfilled.
Today, let us praise The Lord for fulfilled promises.
