A Skeptic’s Dilemma
Christmas time again with its endless fussing and rushing. People are spending more than they can afford, as the radio plays "Let it Snow” and "Noel." Once more we hear those stories of the virgin giving birth to the baby born long ago, and the angels rejoicing and telling shepherds about the king in a manger. T.V. preacher's tell of when the child became a man, how he walked on water and raised the dead.
But why should I believe all this? Why should I care? Honestly, if Jesus died, how can believers say that he lives? Who walks around after they have been crucified? Now I'm hearing those church bells, celebrating the birth thousands of years ago. Why should I listen anymore? Christmas. Hah!
Yet preachers do talk about forgiveness, and the chance of a new life. Who doesn't wish that they had the opportunity to change things for the better? Now that I think about it, there are relatives of mine who say that they had a life changing experience when they became Christians. The rest of the family speak of how Harry and Jane have become caring people. I have seen this change in them, they have a peace in spit of Harry's health. Mother told me that thy are praying for the rest of the family. Umm.
It's all very confusing, yet somehow there is an element of truth there that appeals to me - and truth is rare. Also, those preachers do seem sincere when they speak of Jesus. What is a person to make of it all? What if I read the Bible for myself? Yes. Maybe that's how I will know if I should care.
Today, let us thank our Heavenly Father for speaking to skeptic's hearts.
