Hebrews 1:1-14. (NIV)
We do not know with certainty the author of the letter to the Hebrews however, there are many assumptions, among them Barnabas, and more especially Paul. The letter was written to Hebrew - Jewish - believers in Yeshua - Jesus - as the Messiah. It is a powerful letter connecting the Old Covenant with the New Covenant and showing the supremacy of Jesus:
“1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”
Yahweh spoke to the Hebrew nation through anointed prophets whose words have come down to us through The Old Testament. The birth, ministry and atonement, of Jesus been the fulfilment of many prophecies, consequently, His teachings and Sacrifice established the The New Covenant.
In his first letter, John also wrote of the Incarnated Jesus, calling Him The Word of Life: “1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us.” - 1 John 1:1-2.
Verse 3 of Hebrews declares the uniqueness of Jesus as the bodily representation of Yahweh:
“3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.”
Concerning His relationship with The Father, Jesus declared: “10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.”- John 14:10-11.
Because the Hebrew people understood angels to be the highest of created beings, the letter now proceeds to teach of Jesus superiority to angels:
“4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.”
Continuing his teaching concerning angels, the author of Hebrews now quote’s from Psalm 2, which is also quoted in Acts 13:
“5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,
“You are my Son;
today I have become your Father”?
Or again,
“I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son”?”
It was at the baptism of Jesus that the voice from Heaven was heard: “And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”- Matthew 3:17.
Verse 6 of Hebrews reminds us of the experience of the shepherds at Jesus birth:
“6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.”
“13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”- Luke 2:13-14.
Verse 7 is a quote from Psalm 104:4:
“7 In speaking of the angels he says,
“He makes his angels spirits,
and his servants flames of fire.”
Verse’s 8-9 quote Psalm 45:6-7 reminding readers that The Messianic Son of David is Devine :
“8 But about the Son he says,
“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.”
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy.”
When the angel appear to Mary, he informed her that her baby would be both Messiah and Divine: “31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:31-33.
Verses 10-12 are quotes from Psalm 102:25-27:
“10 He also says,
“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
and your years will never end.”
Verse 13 is quoted from the Messianic Psalm 110:
“13 To which of the angels did God ever say,
“Sit at my right hand
until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet”?”
As God’s Son, Jesus reigns while angels serve:
“14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
Philippians 2:9 also teaches Jesus superiority: “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,”
This is Jesus, our Saviour and Lord.
Today,let us give thanks for the revelation of Scripture.
