Psalm 46 - NKJV.
Psalm 46 was written by the Sons of Korah, who during the time of King David, were leaders in choral and orchestral music in the tabernacle. The Psalm celebrates Jerusalem as the City of God, and was the inspiration for Martin Luther’s hymn “A MightyFortress Is Our God.” Psalm 46 is notable for its expression of faith in the God who is ever present to help all who turn to Him, as the opening verse’s declare:
“1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling.”
As Christians we experience the graciousness of our God continually. Although life can bring troubling season’s we have the assurance that The Almighty is with us.
“4 There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God,
The holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High.
5 God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved;
God shall help her, just at the break of day.”
Jerusalem did not have a river consequently, verse’s 4 and 5 are a metaphor for the continuing outflow of blessings from The Almighty. For the Christian, they allude to the Holy Spirit moving as a river throughout the Church bringing Grace, wisdom and peace.
“6 The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved;
He uttered His voice, the earth melted.
7 The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Throughout history we have experienced the raging of nation’s. Even today nations are engaged in hostilities with one another, resulting in much suffering and death. Through it all The Lord is a refuge for His people.
“8 Come, behold the works of the LORD,
Who has made desolations in the earth.
9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;
He burns the chariot in the fire.”
Although humanity will not acknowledge God’s hand involved in bringing peace to the earth, He is there moving on men’s hearts. Lasting peace will not be a reality until all acknowledge The Prince of Peace of Isaiah 9:6:
“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
We now come to the inspiring closing verse’s of Psalm 46:
“10 Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth!
11 The LORD of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge.”
Verse 10 instructs: "Be still, and know that I am God." According to this instruction, there is a way in which you and I can know The Almighty, and experience His forgiveness, peace and love. Unless we learn to turn off the world for a short while, and spend that precious time with The Lord, we will not know the peace of His presence in our life.
In John 14:1, Jesus said: “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.” According to this verse, to believe in Jesus is to believe in the God of The Bible. It is this belief that separates Christians from the world. In verses 6 & 7 of the same chapter Jesus also said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”
Today, let us be still and know our God.
