Psalm 9: 1-10 - ESV
“1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart;
I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
2 I will be glad and exult in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”
Giving thanks is a natural response to The Lords Blessings in our lives. Israel had received many blessings throughout its history. From the exodus out of Egypt, and the miracle of the Red Sea, to the desert wandering where they received the commandments. Reading verses such as these remind you and I that we also receive many blessings in our daily lives of which we should remember to give thanks.
In verse’s 3 and 4 David acknowledges that it was Yahweh who defended him against his enemies in times of trouble. David knew that his victories from the time that he faced Goliath, to the victories over the Philistines, were because of his faithfulness as a servant of The Lord:
“3 When my enemies turn back,
they stumble and perish before your presence.
4 For you have maintained my just cause;
you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment.”
Verse’s 5 and 6 refer to the wicket nation’s that were destroyed when the Hebrew people entered the promised land:
“5 You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish; you have blotted out their name forever and ever.
6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins;
their cities you rooted out;
the very memory of them has perished.”
Life can seem like a constant battle for many, be it health issues, family discord, or the pandemic. Also, depending on where one lives in the world, the danger could be war, or wild fires, or flooding, and even riots in the streets. It is in times such as these that we can turn to The Lord as our refuge and stronghold. Verse’s 7-10 are a reminder that our God is Holy and the Eternal Judge over all. It is He who is ever open to our plea, and ever ready to bring comfort to all who put their trust in Him:
“7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever;
he has established his throne for justice,
8 and he judges the world with righteousness;
he judges the peoples with uprightness.
9 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 And those who know your name put their trust in you,
for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.”
Heavenly Father we are so grateful for your Word which records your love and mercy shown to David and Israel. As believers in your Son Jesus, we know that we can always call upon you because, through the Atonement of Jesus, we have become your children, having the assurance that You Lord are our refuge and stronghold in times of trouble. Amen.
Today, let us remember the One who is our refuge and stronghold in times of trouble.
