Jesus Heals Many
"As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was." (Mark 1:29 - 34)
The home of Simon and Andrew may have been close to the Synagogue as meals were served after the service was ended. The healing of Simon's mother in-law is a wonderful picture of God's love shown through Jesus. The loving way He takes her hand and lifts her up from her sick bed speaks to the fact that God is concerned about all aspects of our lives. Notice how she immediately began to serve, showing that the healing was instantaneous - she did not require any recovery time. That some of the disciples were married we see in 1 Corinthians 9:5 where Paul refers to the wives of the apostles: "Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas?" Cephas is the other name of Simon Peter. (John 1:42 ) Interestingly, we do not have any record of the disciples children.
The Jewish day began and ended at sundown. The day's of the week did not have names like our week days, except for the Sabbath which is our Saturday. Instead the days of the week had numbers, starting with our Sunday which was the first day of the week, and Friday would be called the sixth day or, eve of the Sabbath. Now that it was after sundown the Sabbath was over, and people could go about their daily lives without the restrictions of the Sabbath rules such as how far to walk, the carrying of objects and labouring which included preparing meals, etc. When the people came to Jesus, some were carrying sick family members. Notice also that the passage says that the demons knew who Jesus was, and that He had power over them.
What a time in history to have lived, and to have seen God in the person of Jesus reaching out with love, touching people in their deepest needs. Sadly, today there are people who still do not know Him. However, for those of us who do know Jesus - and have confessed Him as our Savior and Lord - we are blessed by experiencing the personal touch of God in our lives.
Today, let us praise our God for His love.
