The Stumbling Block
The virgin birth is a stumbling block to many people. Some will say that they believe in Jesus as a man. They will even accept many of the recorded reports concerning His life. However, that Jesus was virgin born, many cannot, and will not accept. People will laugh at the idea, saying, a virgin birth is not a natural possibility. That of course is the point. As God's Son, Jesus could not be conceived under natural conditions. To have been conceived as the result of the natural union of Joseph and Mary, Jesus would have inherited the sin nature. Thus, He would not have been the spotless lamb of God, born to be sacrificed for the sin of humanity.
If Jesus had not been born of a virgin, that is; born of God, He would have been a fraud. He would have been guilty of the charges brought by the Sanhedrin, namely blasphemy because He had claimed to be God’s Son. (Luke 22:70)
According to the Law of Moses, the punishment for blasphemy was death. Furthermore, the charges of sedition that the Jewish leaders brought before Ponticus Pilate when accusing Jesus of claiming to be the Jewish Messiah - thereby deemed a threat to Rome - would have been proven. (Luke 23:1-3) Consequently, making the crucifixion of Jesus just another cruel death of another radical Jew.
If Jesus had not been virgin born as the Son of God, there would not have been a resurrection. We would have no eternal hope, for we would die in our sins. The good news is, Jesus was born of a virgin. He was and is the Son of God as the voice from Heaven announced, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." (Matthew 3:17)
Salvation is a gift from God. It is The Father reaching down to rebellious, sinful people who are incapable of redeeming themselves. Therefore, because we are incapable of redeeming ourselves: "God, gave His only Son."(John 3:16) The next portion of John 3:16 reads: "Whoever believes in him shall not perish." There are many who will state: "Oh, I believe in God." However, in the King James version, James 2:19 states: "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." So what dose it mean when it states, believes in him? It means to hold as true, to have faith in, to put ones total trust in.
If you have not experienced this love of God, now is the time to come to Him confessing your sin, and therefor receiving the free gift of eternal life through Jesus's sacrifice on the cross on your behalf. Scripture promises that when we confess our sin, God is faithful, and will forgive our sin. Why? Because Our Heavenly Father sent His Son Jesus, who laid down His life as a sacrifice, so that you and I can receive eternal life.
Today, let us praise Our Father for The Son.
