I Love You Lord My Strength
In the opening verses of Psalm 18 David begins with a statement from his heart: “I love you, Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.”
In these meaningful verses David, as a man of prayer, describes his love and reliance upon Yahweh. These are words that only someone who has experienced the very presence, and comforting help of The Lord can confidently proclaim. When you and I experience a saving relationship with God we also can make these verses our own prayer.
Referring to God as a Rock is to recognize that He is strong, and is also a firm foundation on whom we can commit our lives. Seeing God as a fortress is to know that you and I can find security in Him because, He has delivered us from the bondage of sin through the sacrifice of Jesus. The Lord becomes as it were a cleft of safety for all who believe in Him.
Through faith in Jesus, you and I can know that we have The Holy Spirit within. He becomes our Shield; a protection from the weapons of the enemy of our soul. When David refers to God as a Horn he is calling to mind the symbolism of strength as in the mighty animals that bear large horns. Just as Yahweh was David’s stronghold and salvation, we who are in Christ Jesus, have confidence in our Heavenly Father for both our daily needs, as also our eternal destiny.
Hear now as Jesus explains: “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:23-27)
Today, let us thank our Great God for His blessings.
