Our Shield
In Psalm 3 we see David as a man undergoing great turmoil in his life. However, in spite of his terrible circumstances David also shows unflinching faith in God as in verse’s 3 and 4:
“But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.”
These verses are also well known as part of the song of worship: “My Glory And The Lifter Of My Head.” Verse’s such as these are a great source of faith builders in times of need. They can help you and I to lift our spirits when repeated in song. They can also be personalized as a prayer:
“You O Lord my God, are a shield around me,
Only You are my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
I call out to You my Lord,
and You answer me from Heaven above.”
So what is meant by the line: “But you, Lord, are a shield around me”? King David - the author of this Psalm - was a man of war and understood the importance of having a shield to protect from the enemy. At that time in history the king was seen as a shield for the people because, he was the man of power along with his army to protect the people from their enemies. Also, when a citizen had an unsettled legal problem, they could call upon the king to settle the issue.
In turn, as born again believers, we have both The Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit in whom we can call upon as Jesus assured us in John 14:15-18: “If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”
What an incredible promise, The Lord Jesus not only redeemed you and I, but also promised to send us The Holy Spirit as an advocate which is one who champions and protects. As Believers in Jesus we are never alone because He promised: “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.” Praise His Holy Name.
Today, let us thank The Lord for His Shield of protection and love.
