God’s Beacon.
During storms, sailors endure the power of sea and wind as their boat's are tossed by high waves threatening the safety of not only their vessel's, but also their lives. Battered by storms, mariners eagerly scan the horizon for the comforting beam of a lighthouse - the beacon that will guide them to safety.
There is a also a lighthouse for you and I when we find ourselves assailed by the storms of life. It is a beacon that we can rely on to prevent our lives breaking up on the destructive rocks of life. God's Word is that beacon which guides those who seek spiritual truth, it is a solid rock on which we can build our lives: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
Jesus, the One of whom Scripture proclaims as redeemer, also promised: “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:24-27)
After many years of struggling in life, not knowing where to turn for spiritual help, I finally heeded advise that lead me to The Bible. It was within its pages that I finally found answers to the fundamental question “why is there so much evil and suffering in this world?” I read how God had created a perfect world until sin entered, bringing with it evil and suffering. God’s answer to sin was Jesus Christ, who came as The Light showing humanity the way back to God.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:16-19)
Although storms batter our lives, we have a haven in God’s Son who bore our sin on Calvary. Thereby, He offered a new, and an eternal life, in the presence of God to all who will accept the sacrifice that He offered for our sin. In John 8:12 Jesus proclaimed: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Today, let us thank God for The Bible, His beacon pointing to eternal life.
