Atonement Through Jesus
There are many who believe that all one needs to do in order to recite forgiveness from God is to repent. I do not disagree that true repentance is important, however we cannot escape the scripture which states: “For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.” (Leviticus 17:11)
According to Strongs Concordance atonement is from ‘kaphar’ which is to appease, forgive, be merciful, pardon, reconcile. Therefore forgiveness and reconciliation is through blood sacrifice. This is reiterated in Heb 9:22: “And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”
In Matthew 5:17-18, Jesus announced that He came among us in order to fulfill the law: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.” So how did Jesus fulfill the law? By been obedient to The Father and taking upon himself the requirement of the law regarding sin.
In Colossians 1:19-20, Paul explained it this way: “For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; 20 And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.” This is why the Baptist said of Jesus: “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
Because Jesus was The Son of God, He was without sin, consequently, He went to the cross as a spotless sacrifice taking the place of sinful humanity as Isaiah 53:4-6 states:
“Surely he hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted.
5 But he was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him;
and with his stripes we are healed.
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned every one to his own way;
and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
In Luke 24:44-46 Jesus again states the importance of His atoning death: “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, 46 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.”
In Luke 22:20-22 Jesus once more explained that it was predetermined that He would shed His blood for humanity: “Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you. 21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!” Notice that Jesus said: “the Son of man goeth, as it was determined,” His atoning suffering and death was determined beforehand by God. And so, as Jesus died His last words were: “It is finished,” signifying that the final sacrifice has been offered thus bringing an end to the Old Covenant, and instigating The New Covenant of Reconciliation in His Blood.
It was Paul who wrote “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.”(2Cor. 5:21) There are many more scriptures teaching that it was the blood sacrifice of Jesus that brought atonement and reconciliation for all who have repented and thereby accepted His sacrifice on their behalf: “In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”(1 John 4:9-10)
Scripture teaches Jesus death was a Preordained Atoning Sacrifice in His Blood for sin, thereby teaching the love of God for humanity: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”(John 3:16-17)
Today, let us give thanks for the Atonement through Jesus.
