Why Did Jesus Die?
After the Hebrew people left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea, God gave them a law through Moses to live by. Anyone transgressing the law becomes a malefactor deserving punishment because they are a wrongdoer, a sinner, and as Ezekiel 18:20 states “The soul that sinneth, it shall die.” The Leviticus law had numerous sacrifices by which a sinner could offer in order to make atonement for their sin, been ever mindful of Leviticus 17:11: “for it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul.”
Paul explained in his letter to the Romans that Jesus came in order to atone for our sins: ”You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8)
While speaking of His ministry, Jesus stated: “It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”(Luke 22:37) This was a reference to Isaiah’s prophecy regarding Messiah: “ - because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” (Isaiah 53:12)
When Jesus went to the cross, He went as - John the Baptist called Him - the Lamb of God in order to appease the Justice of the Law, thereby Atoning for sin and bringing Redemption. His Sacrifice now gives the opportunity for Gentiles to also receive Redemption as Paul states: “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.”(Galatians 3:13-14)
Because ‘The soul that sinneth, it shall die,’ and we Gentiles have no way of atonement through blood sacrifice, Jesus becoming a curse shows God’s love for humanity: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”(John 3:16-17) We therefore are blessed because, when we repent in the name of Jesus, we are doing so in the power of His Atoning Sacrice on our behalf. Scripture promises that when we confess our sin, God is faithful, and will forgive our sin. Why? Because Our Heavenly Father sent His Son Jesus, who laid down His life as a sacrifice, so that you and I can receive eternal life. All praise to His Holy Name.
Today, let us give thanks for Jesus and His Atoning Sacrifice.
