The Coming Of Messiah
The record of the Old Testament contains many prophesies's concerning the coming of Messiah. Isaiah been one such prophet who recorded in chapter seven of the book bearing his name; "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel" (Verse 14). The word Immanuel is a very special word meaning: God with us. Isaiah was implying that God was coming among His people.
In chapter nine Isaiah went even further in his description of Messiah when he wrote "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace" (Verse 6). Messiah would be no ordinary man, for the titles that Isaiah gave to him in this portion of Scripture belong to none other than Almighty God. For to whom but Yahweh, can such titles as; Mighty God, or Everlasting Father be attributed? A prophet even fortold the birthplace of Messiah: "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, Out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, Whose origins are from of old, from ancient times" Micah 5:2.
Time moved on, and the Jewish people continued to look for the coming of the Promised One. The empires of Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Grease were no more, and Rome was now in it's dominance. Along with the conquests came the Pax Roma; the Roman peace where its territories experienced the rule of law and order. New roads were built making travel to other cities, and other countries easier, also the sea routes were free of pirates - making sea travel safer. Citizens were able to move around the empire, trading and sharing their beliefs. The time had arrived for God’s word to come to pass. Messiah - in the person of Jesus - whose name means Jehovah saves, or, as some translate it; God is Salvation, was born in Bethlehem of Judea (Luke 2:11). The New Testament, which was written in Greek, translated the Hebrew word Messiah as Christ. Both words have the same meaning, which is 'The Anointed One.'
Today, let us thank our Heavenly Father for the gift of His Son.
