Some people hold to an eschatology indicating that we should be on guard constantly, thinking that Christ could come at any moment. In reality, I believe Christ was just warning us to be vigilant about deceivers, about pretenders, who come in the name of God but secretly hope to create trouble and confusion.
It's important that we recognize Jesus was less concerned about our knowing the time of his Coming, and more concerned about staying prepared for his Coming by being alert to devils who would discourage us, mislead us, and oppose us. Staying prepared for Christ's Coming is a matter of staying tuned in to the pitfalls that would make us not ready, sins of covetousness and lust, sins of distraction that lack prioritization, etc.
To me life is a matter of keeping tuned in to Christ, asking him for wisdom, so that at all times and in all circumstances, we avoid the problems and pitfalls that can hurt our call to testify to others about Christ's love for them. It is a holy love, and we need to remain cognizant of that fact.
If we find ourselves lacking in love, we are not ready. If we find we aren't living a holy life, we are not ready. To know what things God is pleased with, we need to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus' example, and stay connected to him at all times.
Paul said things like, always praying, always being thankful, always rejoicing, and holding to faith against the false efforts of self-justification. We simply need to look to Him to know how to live a loving, and a holy, life. We can't do it by our own efforts alone. All virtue comes from Him. It comes by staying in submission to Him.
