Light and Darkness
When we read The New Testament we are reading The Good News which is the meaning of the word Gospel. The message of The Bible proclaims clearly that there is darkness in our world which is constantly in conflict with God’s Light. The Good News is that Our Heavenly Father has made a way for you and I to live in His Light through Jesus; by being purified from sin:
“5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.” (1 John 1:5-10 NIV)
When John states 'God is Light,' he is proclaiming the purity of God, opposed to the darkness of sin. For new believers who are seeking to have God’s Light in their life, The New Testament introduces Jesus as The One who brought that Light into our world. Living by the truth of Gods Word brings you and I out of the deception and darkness of this world into The Light of The Truth which exists not only in this life, but also into eternity. In John 3:19-21 we have this proclamation:
"This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God."
John teaches clearly that we enter The Light through the Atonement for sin obtained solely through Calvary when he wrote: “the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” This is also affirmed throughout Scripture in passages such as:
“19 Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds,” (Hebrews 10:19-24 NIV)
Today, let us give thanks for Jesus, God’s saving Light.
