The Righteousness Of God
Righteousness can be understood as ethical, or moral rightness which describes the chief attributes of God. In the Old Testament God’s moral requirements were laid out in The Law. The Almighty also provided for sacrificial atonement by which a transgressor could get back into right standing with God: “‘If he brings a lamb as his sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish. Then he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill it as a sin offering at the place where they kill the burnt offering.”(Leviticus 4:32-33)
The English word atonement has the original meaning of ‘at-one-ment,” In other words to be at one, or, in harmony with someone. This is understood more profoundly in the Atoning Sacrifice of Jesus as the Messiah, who’s redeeming sacrifice was foretold in Isaiah 53:5-6: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
When the apostle Peter described Jesus’s suffering as Messiah, he portrayed Him as the humble obedient servant of Yahweh: “When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” (1 Peter 2:23-25)
Paul explained: “But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.” (Romans 3:21-26)
You and I are privileged to have the opportunity of personality experiencing the blessings of our Heavenly Father’s Righteousness. This Righteousness is made available to all who repent, and accept the Atoning Sacrifice of Jesus for our sin. Jesus offers Redemption for each one, who by faith, turn to Him as Lord and Savior thereby, coming into right standing with God. This is the Good News of The Gospel.
Today, let us praise our God for His Righteousness.
