I Am Who I Am
Who is God? This is The Most Important of questions. Looking around our world we can see many varieties of god’s. So how can a person know which is The true God? Knowing the answer is literally the difference between life and death to each one of us, which is why He has given us The Scriptures as the revelation of His Truth in which we are encouraged to: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)
Scripture also records these important words concerning God’s revelation of who He is: “Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.” (Exodus 3:13-15)
Because we are unable to save ourselves from our sin, God did the unthinkable as recorded in Matthew 1:23: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)
Among the many claims recorded in The Bible that Jesus made were the following: “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” (John 14:6-7)
In His effort to show who He was to the people of His time Jesus proclaimed to them: “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” 57 So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.” (John 8:56-59)
Lazarus and his sisters were friends of Jesus, and when Lazarus died his sister’s sent for Jesus who came to the tomb as recorded in John chapter 11. Before raising Lazarus from the dead, Jesus asked a very profound question of which is revenant to everyone: “Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
Among the most comforting sayings of Jesus is the description that He gave proclaiming Himself as a shepherd willing to lay down His life for His flock: “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:14-18. ESV)
This is our God of whom The Bible states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.” (John 3:16-21 NIV)
Today, let us give thanks to The God who has revealed Himself to us in His Son.
