Could This Child Be The One?
We remember when Joseph and Mary arrived in our town of Bethlehem. It was the time of the census when the Roman occupiers had issued an order requiring each man to return to his ancestral home for the registration. As a descendent of King David Joseph came to Bethlehem to be registered along with his wife Mary, who was expecting her first child. The night that their son was born seemed like any other night in our town, in spite of the large number of people here for the census. That is, until we heard the shepherd’s story.
Local shepherds told of when they were tending the sheep in the fields an angel had appeared to them. At first, they were terrified, then the angel spoke to them, saying that he brought a message of good news and great joy for all the people. This angel proclaimed to the bewildered shepherds the birth of Messiah in Bethlehem. These shepherds then told of how a host of angels filled the sky praising God. Having been instructed where to find this newborn baby, the shepherds set out and found the child in a manger.
After seeing the newborn, they were filled with awe and wonder, and praising God they told their story to all they met. We were amazed, and wondered what this night would mean for the future. As far back as we can remember our prophets have spoken of God’s promise to send the Anointed One - Messiah, who would save His people Israel. The prophecies did say that he would be The Son of David. Moreover, both Joseph and Mary are descendants of King David, who was from Bethlehem. Could this child be the one? Dare we hope?
Today, let us praise our God for sending Messiah.
